Either way, the goal that the creation of a unique backup, with a standard cwp extension, when the user wants one made, should require as little thought and typing as possible.
CAKEWALK SONAR X1 LE MANUAL HOW TO
Better yet - let the user select how to format the auto-named backup (not to be confused with the current autosave or versioning functions): I may want the file to have a time stamp, someone else might be satisfied with just a sequential number. The point is, when doing a routine backup, the entire naming process could be automated using a method like I described in my previous post. I do that all the time, when I'm creating an actual new version of the project, or when I'm doing a routine backup. You still have to manually give the file it a name. And while they're at it, they could improve the File Open dialog to make these (and all) files easier to find and open once they've been created.īut what would a Save-As button do: Bring up the Save As dialog? If so, while a button might be nice, it's really easy to bring up that dialog just by typing Alt-f, a - it's quick, one-handed key sequence. That's all it would take and it would be infinitely more useful and friendly than the too-clever-by-half versioning feature. Short and sweet and to the point - and sortable by both date and name.

It CW wanted to give its users enhanced save and file recover functions, they could do so very simply: Create a File menu option that would save the current version of the project under the same name with an appended timestamp, eg, Upgrade Blues 01-46-25am.cwp. Neither autosave nor versioning are a substitute for frequent saving and save-as'ing. Plus, the "revert" half of the versioning feature will always overwrite your current version of the project. Auto save is too flakey in terms of how it calculates "changes." And versioning creates a new version every time you manually save the file, which ends up cluttering the folder. UK pricing is still TBC.I don't use auto save or versioning. US prices have already been confirmed as $399 for Sonar X1 Producer, $199 for Studio and $99 for Essential.

CAKEWALK SONAR X1 LE MANUAL UPDATE
We'll cover these in our upcoming review - the software is scheduled to be released on 8 December, and you can rest assured that if you buy Sonar 8.5 Studio or Producer from this day forward, you'll get a free update to its X1 counterpart.

That's the Sonar X1 feature highlights covered, but of course, smaller tweaks have also been made throughout the application. Specifically, the ProChannel can be placed pre or post FX bin and you can drag 'n' drop the routing order of the EQ, compressor and tube saturation. It also offers two fully parametric filters, Pure, Vintage and Modern modes and an additional 'Gloss' mode to add instant sparkle.Įlsewhere in the ProChannel there are two types of tube saturation (this can be dialled in with a single control) and flexible routing options. There are actually two types of compression - the PC76 U-Type channel compressor and the PC4K S-Type bus compressor - while the EQ is 6-band (2 shelf/bells and 4 bell/notches). This appears as standard on every track and offers vintage-style compression and EQ.

NEXT: ProChannel and pricing ProChannelĪs before, Sonar comes in Studio and Producer versions (plus a new Essential version that replaces Cakewalk's entry-level Home Studio products) and the biggest new Producer-exclusive feature is the ProChannel. These enable you to create arrangements of multiple effects and then tweak them as if there were a single effect. Other workflow enhancements include enhanced drag 'n' drop functionality - you can now move the vast majority of things in Sonar from one place to another - and FX Chains.

Sonar's tools work across all of the software's editing views.

The big news here is that the mouse pointer automatically changes to the most appropriate tool based on context (saving you the bother of switching), though there's also a pop-up, floating tool window so that you can make manual selections. Of course, there are still plenty of times when you'll need to use your mouse, which is why Cakewalk has also introduced Smart Tools. Sonar veterans can be assured that their old shortcuts can still be used, but Cakewalk believes that its new system is better and hopes that even old-hands will switch to it. To give you an example, L turns loopjng on or off, Shift + L sets the loop points to selection, and Ctrl + L enables Groove Clip looping in the Track view. And speaking of keys, Sonar X1 'reimagines' the software's keyboard shortcuts by grouping similar functions around one Alpha Key. Fortunately, Screensets enable to you to recall all window positions, sizes and states - these can be accessed from the Control Bar or your QWERTY keyboard.
